Who are the Fownes Brewing Co. ?

The chances are if you’re reading this you’ve only recently heard of the Fownes Brewery Co.

Don’t feel bad, as the UK’s only Dwarfen Brewery we’re pretty small and keep to ourselves.

Since 2012 brothers James and Tom Fownes have been supplying a selection of the very best pubs in the Midlands and beyond with their impressive range of ales. During that time you’ve been missing out on our Regional Award winning porters as well as our unique brand of Epic Dwarfen Ales and Tales.

We understand the important role played by the venues we supply, if you’re not keeping the beer in great condition it makes us look bad. As such we’ve been very selective in who we’ve supplied. Those venues lucky enough to supply our beers have been extremely satisfied with our products and keep on coming back for more.

‘As a nationally award winning micro pub, we receive customers from around the UK in addition to our regulars who’s expectations are very high. Since we opened in 2014, the Fownes brewery have been supplying us with an interesting range of ales that are full of flavour and perform consistently in the cellar.’
John & Laura, Owners of Arvon Ales, Llandrindod Wells,CAMRA Pub of the Year for Wales 2016.

We’ve used our success to increase our production capacity ( don’t worry, we’re still small and exclusive) and now we’d like to take the opportunity to share with you our tried and tested best selling core range, exciting limited edition range and all new for 2017 speciality porters.

Our satisfied customers have also taken the time to tell you why they’ve enjoyed working with us and think you will too.

‘These guys are passionate about their art and it comes through in their big bodied, flavoursome brews.’
Tony Colpitts. Landlord at The Wheatsheaf, Walsall.

‘Fownes brew an imaginative range of ales that taste great and perform well in the cellar.’
Gary & Angela Morton. Hail to the Ale Micropub, CAMRA West Midlands Pub of the Year 2015.

What’s a Dwarfen Brewery?

You’ve no doubt heard of micro-breweries and nano-breweries, so what’s a Dwarfen brewery? The Dwarfen Brewery is the main brand identity of the Fownes Brewing Co. It doesn’t refer to the size of the brewery (although it is physically a small location and only nine brewer’s barrels a week in capacity) but rather the concept behind the beers. A focus on telling tales about the Dwarfen characters created by Thomas; supported by James’s artwork is just as important as the finely crafted ales. The Fownes brewery offers customers something unique.

Through an expanding world of ales and tales, you will be introduced to Master Brewer Broddr Firebeard, the tragic figure of King Korvak and the runic might of Frost Hammer. To support these creations, customers can find the stories and imagery on the website along with details of live events with our professional storyteller.

‘The Black Country is home to the country’s best ales and Fownes beers were no exception when I tried them earlier this year.’
Ian Austin MP Dudley North. Commenting on why he nominated Fownes beers to the House of Commons bar.

Why should you stock our products?

James and Thomas believe that the best way to do business is to work hand in hand with each link of the supply chain to ensure that everyone is getting the highest quality product and keeps coming back for more.

It all starts at the farm.

Passionate people have a way of instilling you with their enthusiasm. That’s certainly what James and Thomas found back in 2012 when they heard an impassioned plea to support British hop growers in an age of bombastic New World hop flavours. They made it their mission when developing new recipes to explore the possibilities of hops grown here in the UK, experimenting with varieties still in the testing stages and being early adopters of new varieties when they become commercially available so they can bring you and your customers the best British hop farmers have to offer.

We’re consistent and we care.

The reason there have been so few outlets for Fownes beers to date is because our customers keep coming back. The products we will supply you will be of a high quality; be ready to serve quickly and consistent.

As a family owned brewery with our name above the door we care about our beers and our reputation. It’s important to us that your experience with our products exceeds your expectations. If there’s anything that you need to better sell our ales orif you would like something brewing exclusively for your pub then just call.

You haven’t heard of us?

That’s not completely unexpected. For the first year and a half we produced twelve firkins a week; half of these casks went through our onsite brewery tap; the rest went to three regular pubs and beer festivals around the region.

There is of course the fact that Fownes beers can only purchased directly through the brewery, we don’t use third parties to distribute our products. This ensures you receive great customer service from staff who are knowledgeable and involved in the production and development of the beers.

‘As the licensee of a real ale only micro pub it’s a delight to deal with a small independent brewery like Fownes. Quality ales across the range of styles; helpful, knowledgable and reliable.’
Paul Hudson. Owner of The Whippet micro pub, Lichfield.

‘I knew Fownes reputation on the beer circuit in the Midlands was second-to-none.’
Marverine Cole. Award-winning Journalist and Beer Writer, and accredited Beer Sommelier, on her experience working with us to put on a Ladies Ale Tasting Evening.
